Bungalow West

Owner Brooke Hansen had over 25 years in luxury design and beauty manufacturing, catering to resorts, luxury hotels, salons and retail stores when she started designing candles with a specific vintage cabana vibe. Her burgeoning candle business led to a year of hosting successful pop-up events and taking in honest customer feedback. This prepared her and her husband, Don, to take a leap and launch their beloved brick-and-mortar boutique, Bungalow West, when the perfect downtown State Street location became available. The initial line of candles quickly evolved into a fully curated mix of East Coast preppy and West Coast lifestyle goods featuring exclusive in-house designs and global gifts, resulting in a masterful blend of elegance and casual comfort. And although the boutique's beach vibes are strong, there are plenty of sophisticated goods that work well for a landlocked lifestyle.

Each visit to Bungalow West promises to be a unique experience. The enticingly merchandised open-air alcove at the store entrance, which harkens back to the business's outdoor market beginnings, sets the tone for the fun found inside the shop. The welcoming and joyful atmosphere of the space is reinforced by the playful selection of home decor, clothing, gifts and games that range from perfect picks for those with a well-developed sense of humor to sweet sentiments on ceramic mugs and uber-soft baby blankets and sweet board books. Olfactory treats in the form of clean-burning candles and aromatherapy bath steamers abound, along with the tactile pleasures of cushy linen pillows and super-soft sweatshirts. There's also jewelry, tea towels, coffee table books and even cute tees for the doggos you adore.

The mingling of international visitors, loyal locals and friendly staff members often creates the air of an impromptu party. Pop in and experience the charm of Bungalow West, where all are welcome, and no invitation is required.

The Crafter's Library

Attention all crafters, wanna be crafters and those who don't yet know they want to be crafters! There's a new venue in town with an entirely refreshing concept for entertainment and socializing - a place built around the idea of making things and meeting people. Recently opened in Downtown Santa Barbara, The Crafter's Library is the ultimate place to nurture your creative spirit, learn something new and leave with a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted project. This beautiful and unique gathering space hits the sweet spot for those seeking a departure from the traditional food and drink-centric mingling. Various classes and workshops, including basic sewing, glass etching, macrame and other modern craft projects, are offered. You can take a class or work on your own, bring your own supplies or purchase them on-site. And for those members who just want to relax, knit, crochet, or simply commune with fellow crafters, a cozy lounge area awaits.

A range of membership options, designed to meet the needs of both locals and visitors (more about that in the Q & A), allow guests access to some of the newest and most sophisticated craft machinery available. And of course, friendly, knowledgeable, and talented team members are on-hand to assist and instruct users on operating the cutting-edge technology. We recently caught up with owner and maker extraordinaire Andrew Rawls between workshops to learn more about his creative endeavor. By the end of our visit, all we could say is sign us up!

Tell us a bit about yourself and the origin story of The Crafter's Library.
As a native Californian, I am thrilled to open my first brick-and-mortar DIY craft and co-working space in Santa Barbara. I hope this space will inspire folks to get in touch with their creative side and allow them to make a few friends along the way.

Are beginners and children welcome at the library, or is it for seasoned crafters only?
Our motto at The Crafter's Library is "anyone can craft!" We truly believe that crafting ability transcends age, race, gender, perceived ability, and pretty much everything else with which we identify ourselves.

Of all the craft machinery members have access to, from simple sewing machines to incredibly high-tech digital carving and laser etching equipment, which are you most excited to have in the library?
As a sewist, I LOVE my sewing machines. But I will say, having some computerized die-cutting machines is awesome. They really elevate craft projects to the next level and give them a totally professional look.

The Crafter's Library offers a variety of affordable membership options, but can out-of-town crafters pop in just for the day?
We are happy to offer single day, week, month or annual membership options. No matter who you are or how much time you're spending in Santa Barbara, you can come in and take advantage of all that we offer here.

The library is a place to create - what other hopes and visions do you have for its future?
I'm excited to see what kinds of communities organically grow here. We are passionate about making sure all people feel welcome and safe with an opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and try something new.

What else would you like for potential members to know about The Crafter's Library?
We are so much more than just a craft store. We offer private event space for parties, corporate events, kids' birthdays, etc. We also have a retail section that features books, fabric, quilting supplies, gifts, and other craft-related goods, along with a selection of consignment items made by members. Folks love having the opportunity here to buy artisan goods from local makers.

Riviera Towel Company

Turkish towel draped crusaders, Shannon and Albert DiPadova, are helping heal the ocean one towel at a time. This local husband and wife duo create beautiful, high-quality, affordable towels and textiles and donate a portion of every sale to help fund marine agencies working to protect our oceans. Designed in Santa Barbara and woven by artisans using traditional methods, Riviera Towel Company towels are intended to go way beyond the beach. They’re seasonless and can be used by a bonfire or at the pool, as a scarf, sarong, or tablecloth, or after a nice hot shower. Inspired by the rivieras around the world, of course including our American Riviera, the color pallets for the designs come from various little details, like the bougainvillea in Santa Barbara, the blue hues of the Mediterranean sea in the South of France, and the bright lemons of the Amalfi Coast.

Visit The Riviera Towel Company designer showroom located on the famous De La Guerra Plaza, just off of State Street, to see the full collection of Turkish towels, bathrobes, blankets, and tote bags, as well as a beautifully curated selection of hats, handbags, cover-ups, jewelry, and other fabulous finds.

Tileco

Tileco is a family-owned business that was started in 1977 by the Muscio family in Santa Maria. Gina’s (pictured in the middle) parents, Mike and Margaret Burchiere, purchased the company in the '80s and opened the other locations. Gina proudly states, “that she is a product of growing up in the industry- living and breathing tile since I was born. I never thought I would end up in the business, but here I am, and I love it. We pulled my husband in as well; he is the CFO, and Bert Muscio runs the Santa Barbara store. My sister, Nikki, is in charge of all of our Social Media. We truly are a family run business, and our roots run deep on the Central Coast.”
